Why join the Self Reliant 4-H Club of Lincoln County

The basic focus of the Self Reliant 4-H Club of Lincoln County is the personal growth of each member. Life skills development is built into every 4-H project, activitie and event to help youth become contributing, productive, self-directed members of society. The above menu of this web site shows the projects this 4-H Club.

Direct Benefits of 4-H:

1. 25 percent more likely to contribute to their families, themselves, and their communities.

2. More likely to see themselves going to college compared to other youth. 41 percent less likely to engage in risk/problem behavior.

3. Higher scores on goal setting and goal management (SOC).

4. A 4-H Study shows that youth involved in high quality, structured out-of-school programs are more likely to develop the “five C’s” (competence, confidence, character, caring and connection).

With these assets and as their participation in 4-H programs increase, they are more likely to be at the highest levels of contributions in their communities.

The 4-H Pledge:

"I Pledge my Head to clearer thinking,
my Heart to greater loyalty,
my Hands to larger service,
my Health to better living,

for my club, my community, my country, and my world."

The pledge tells what 4-H is all about. 4-H has as its goal the four-fold development of youth:
Head
Heart
Hands
Health

The pledge was adopted by the delegates to the 1927 National 4-H Club Camp in Washington, DC. State club leaders voted for and adopted the pledge for universal use.
The phrase "and my world" was added in 1973. The saying of the pledge has prominent place in 4-H activities at regular 4-H meetings, achievement days, and other club events.

4-H Mission

4-H empowers youth to reach their full potential, working and learning in partnership with caring adults.

4-H Vision

A world in which youth and adults learn, grow and work together as catalysts for positive change.

Motto:

"To Make The Best Better"

The motto was adopted at about the same time as the 4-H Club Pledge. Its intent is to inspire young people to continue to learn and grow, to make their best efforts better through participating in educational experiences.

What the 4-H hope to accomplish

The United States is falling behind other nations in developing its future workforce of scientists, engineers, and technology experts. America now faces a future of intense global competition with a startling shortage of scientists. Only 18 percent of US high school seniors are proficient in science. A mere 5 percent of current US college graduates earn science, engineering, or technology degrees compared to 66 percent in Japan and 59 percent in China. Couple these statistics with the fact that current scientists and engineers are retiring in record numbers, and it becomes clear that America faces a crisis in its ability to keep up with increasing demand for professionals trained in these fields.

To ensure global competitiveness, the Self Reliant 4-H of Lincoln County is connected to the research and resources of Oregon State University.

4-H has long been committed to developing high values, character and knowledge in America’s youth. There will be multiple opportunities for teenagers to learn and share their discoveries and exchange ideas via social networks. Curriculum path on plants, animals and biotechnology will help youth discover the diverse kinds of science, engineering and technology involved from more than a thousand dynamic learning activities, both hands-on and simulated.

For more than a century, 4-H nationwide Clubs has engaged our country’s youth in the building blocks of economic success. This has meant a solid focus on agricultural science, electricity, mechanics, entrepreneurship, and natural sciences. Today, 4-H out-of-school opportunities also exist in subjects like bio-fuels, renewable energy, and computer science.

As a public-private partnership, 4-H focus a variety of resources and expertise to strengthen young people’s discovery and exploration of science. We believe fostering passion in science today will shape education and career decisions tomorrow.
